You still playing this? I remember having DW4, DW4 XL and DW4 Empire all on my shelf next to each other. They look so epic with the themed cover art!

I haven't played it in a little while. I went back to 3 and 3XL since I kind of like them better.

I always enjoyed DW3. I liked the level layouts and the way battles would feel like lengthy drawn-out epics. I still think I preferred the smoother combat and overall game in DW4 a bit more though.

Yes, the combat in 4 and 5 are really good. I kind of wish it stayed with that in the newer games because it all looks so flashy to me now. That's really the only thing I would want in 3, but I love it still.

Yeah the recent games are a mixed bag. I actually started to fall out of love with the series with DW5. I played DW6 Empires and enjoyed it for what it was but could definitely see the flaws. The "Renbu" combat system was very dull and repetitive and the actual movesets seemed too weightless and over the top. A lot of movesets lacked a balance - most were either too narrow of an attack range or other were to "sweepy".

For me DW7 kind of brought the series back to being something playable and enjoyable for various reasons

I'm watching the footage of 9 you and Gotenks post and I got to say, it makes me feel like I'm not gonna like it. There's so many like knock 50 guys in the air and do a bunch of chops and then back down with a boom. It's too...I don't know...flashy as I've said.

I'm not really sure it's "flashy" as such, it's just that the DW games combined with modern technology have allowed for more enemies on screen at once. DW definitely went through a more "anime" oriented action phase with 6 and 7, but the only things that are over-the-top in DW9 seem to be the weapons and fantasy/magic elements.

The gameplay footage looks floaty to me, but so did DW6 & 7 and when you play the games with controller in hand they feel so much better than they look.

Perhaps the latest games just aren't for you in terms of combat? Something more akin to Dark Souls might be to your liking?

Floaty is a better word, yes. I watched a little bit of 8's combat and Lu Bu just kind of runs and a big ol wall of force kills like 30 guys.

You're right I think. I was more used to the mash attack and hit one or two guys rather than demolish an entire troop with one combo.

Personally I don't mind killing many enemies at once. If I'm playing as a guy like Lu Bu or Zhang Fei I want to be able to mow down tens of enemies in one go, sending out ripples and intimidating them. But there has to be that balance where I can play as somebody like SSX or Jiang Wei and be more precise and nimble.

I think the only way I will decide if I like how the combat "feels" is by getting my hands on the game itself.

Also: Keep in mind the game demos are played on the lowest difficulty. On Chaos mode the enemies are NOT knocked back by charge attacks in the same way as on easy difficulties! The harder modes might provide more challenge and realism for you
