I encountered this pit at random while mining. It was a very convenient source for Obsidian ore. I did end up wiping it out entirely, and sending the water over to another somewhat nearby pool of lava to farm some more. Interestingly, the water level didn't drop at all (so it got deeper as the lava portion shrunk).
